What’s a Blueprint for Creativity?

It’s a distilled version of a musical form, paring it down to the bones, so it’s easy-peasy to play when you start off. But that’s just where the fun begins. Once you learn the blueprint, it becomes LIMITLESS: Limitless in how rich, and complex you can expand it. Limitless in how many pieces you can create from the same blueprint. Limitless in how expressive and creative you can be with it.

And that’s what I LOVE to teach (and to do!)

The new Blueprint program is an 8-Module foundation for all the other Academy classes, a kind of ‘Academy Prep’ to set harpists up for the Spring and Summer programs in Jazz, Blues, Arrangement and Performance. AND it’s a really cool way to learn to play!

What I did was to distill all the major classes in the Academy, each into a 90 minute class. Each is based on a creative structure, so I taught each structure as a living Blueprint for Creativity.

Having this new series of classes means that Academy members can get a quick refresher any time they want, and between Academy sessions, non-members can start their creative journey without having to wait for the next session to start.

What was the Inspiration behind “Blueprints for Creativity”?

Since the Academy opened in 2016, I’ve been teaching creative structures — but I never taught them one-after-another in a way that students could really see the difference and similarities between them.

Instead of creating a series of isolated training videos, I recorded each one LIVE with the Academy members, creating space for the spontaneity of questions, and coaching, for a class that’s available on-demand – but filled with the vibrance of a LIVE experience.

Why Play Music from a Blueprint?

Three of the most beautiful parts of learning to play music from a creative blueprint – rather than a prewritten arrangement – are: 

1. You can adapt the skill level of the piece you’re playing to match your own – and you can continue to adapt it as your skills develop, embellishing, simplifying as needed.
2. Working from a blueprint gives you infinite opportunities to develop your improvisation abilities, and to keep developing them every time you play.
