How could you not love these chords??
Today I’m working on the materials for this weekend’s so we can FEEL it and HEAR it, so it comes alive.
Hands on Harmony is a workshop about how harmony works on OUR instrument. Since all the content is available to you right when you sign up, it can be learned in one day or one week. I really want you to have this in your hands and your head, because it will make all the other courses I teach so much more fun and enriching for you.
Whenever I work on a new course or a new way to explain something, I’m constantly searching for ways to visualize it to myself.
I need to see it as one organism, one shape, one animal, one map.
And I need to love it. Because it’s beautiful, or clear, or funny or just alive.
Some I work on for years, some are quick sketches like this … er … uh … well that’s the thing …
This is my newest visualization of an extended chord and it’s possible alterations. I can see it’s an animal. But what’s it called??
Do tell me. Below, in the comments.
And if you play the harp, sign up for “Hands on Harmony” and learn how to play this baby on your harpstrings.

It is a ROOT-INTERVALLEY CAT that is very hip, lives in bars, jazz/blues clubs and harp music studios!!!!
Ha! A Rooting animal that lives wherever music is played – I love it!
This animal is a harmonic Oddy, I think.
I’m French and I looked for a translation of “nombre impair” ( 3, 5, 7, …) in English, and I found “odd number”. Which is strange, because “odd”, for me has always meant “weird”. Which suits pretty well to your strange animal, finally!
Well, its physical appearance is strange. I have no idea of its harmonic appearance because I don’t know nothing in this field… Maybe one day I should try your teaching!
With my greatest admiration.
I love this, Sonia! I hadn’t really thought about the Odd numbers, but that’s important! It’s exactly right. So … A Harmonic Oddity – yes it DOES suit this animal perfectly. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Thank YOU.
For being who you are!
Ans now that I’ve finally dared write to you, I’m going to take advantage of this opportunity of dialogue (is it a proper way to say it?) to ask you 2 things. And I promise not to monopolize all the space here.
First I wanted to know if there is any possibility to hear your Harmonic Oddity?
The second question has nothing to do with this subject : I saw that you may come to France, in Brittany, and you wrote that “these dates are still tentative”… Is there a chance that this dream of mine might come true??!!
Well, the 11ths are… no, never mind. And the 5ths are sorta… well, maybe I’d better not go there…
Whatever it is, it appears to be descended from a fox. Named DHC.
