WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT?
=====================
Last January, eclectic theater-music performer Deborah Henson-Conant
played her one-woman show, "Stand Up and Sing, Harp Lady!"
at Jimmy Tingle's OFF BROADWAY Theatre in Somerville for the
first two weekends of the year. Expecting a small crowd for
this quirky, experimental show in chilly January, Tingle and
Henson-Conant were both blown-away when the run quickly sold
out.
This January, Henson-Conant's back with a new version of "Stand
Up and Sing, Harp Lady!" -- with more stories from her
improbable life and even more improbable imagination, a full
month of shows and a sneak peak at her upcoming DVD.
For Henson-Conant, "Stand Up and Sing, Harp Lady!' is a
chance to let loose on stage after the last year, during which
she filmed her one-woman show with full symphony orchestra for
DVD (for release May 2006). "Look, when you're working
with an 80-piece orchestra, you can't try out new material or
be totally impromptu. 'Stand Up and Sing, Harp Lady!' is a chance
for me to experiment, get in over my head, invent a great show,
connect with a more intimate audience and have a lot of fun."
=====================
WHAT'S THE SHOW LIKE?
=====================
Henson-Conant tells off-the-cuff stories, sings and plays the
electric lever harp. Forget the angelic gold harp -- Henson-Conant's
looks more like a huge electric guitar with 30 strings. She
straps it on, turns up the juice, sings and plays in styles
from Blues to Flamenco and "tells tall tales with the ease
of a stand-up comedian." (The Plain Dealer)
The front rows of Deborah's show are always filled with children,
so the Sunday matinee shows are scheduled at a family-friendly
time to accomodate folks ages 7 and up (The show is recommended
for ages 10 and up on Fridays and Saturdays).
=====================
SHOW BLURB for "Stand Up and Sing, Harp Lady!":
=====================
Little Debby never wanted to play the harp. What loud-mouthed
12-year-old would? "I'll NEVER play that sissy hunk of
wood!" she screamed. But through the irony of karmic twist,
she ended up a child prodigy, saddled with the instrument she
calls "a severe musical disability."
"Stand Up and Sing, Harp Lady!" chronicles her road
to recovery - from brunch-playing harpist to the "Wild
Woman of the Harp" - in music, stories and humor. When
this harp lady stands up on stage...Jimi Hendrix turns up the
distortion on his electric harp in Heaven; erudite Somerville
dogs start a cultural exchange program with poodles in France;
Ludwig von Frankenstein takes to his musical laboratory and
this wild woman turns the pansy of the instrument world into
a powerhouse.
Her mix of scientific illogic, improbable romance and great
music give her shows an incredibly diverse audience. Die-hard
"Deb-heads" mix with families, teens, nerds and women-and-their-spouses,
for a combination of feel-good, think-wierd sheer-amazement
at what one person can do with a musical affliction.

PERFORMER BIO
=====================
Henson-Conant has reinvented herself and her improbable instrument
through a 20-year career that's taken her from restaurant dining
rooms to rock clubs and Symphony halls. The symphonic version
of her one-woman show is due out on DVD in May 2006.
Deborah Henson-Conant has toured with the Boston Pops, opened
for Ray Charles at Tanglewood, performed her one-woman show
from Edinburgh to LA, released over a dozen solo recordings
and starred in the PBS special "Celtic Harpestry."
She's been interviewed by Charlie Rose, Lou Rawls, Joan Rivers,
Studs Terkel, Scott Simon, Susan Stamberg and has been featured
on NBC, CBS, CNN, NPR and hosted television shows for BET and
BBC Affiliates.
Henson-Conant is in as much demand for her musical "lectures"
as for her music. She was recently one of an elite group of
New England thinkers invited to speak at the prestigious Boston
Globe "Ideas" Conference. Her original concert DVD
with full symphony orchestra will be released in May, 2006.
