Long before the auditions start the creative team for a musical is deep in meetings, sharing ideas, building designs, brainstorming and literally building the creative scaffolding for the actors.
This is what I’m learning as I become a PRODUCER for my original musical “The Golden Cage” which is opening Off-Broadway in April – in NYC this spring – “The Golden Cage” – thanks to the first-ever CreateTheatre Series developed by producer Cate Cammarata — and thanks all of YOU who’ve already donated to “The Golden Cage” (And if you haven’t yet – make a tax-deductible donation here. )
I had no idea how many people it takes to put a show on the stage – even just a two-person show! Check out the list of Creative Directors and Designers that are already developing the show … before the actors are even chosen.
Just think about that. When you come to the show you see two people on the stage – and a brilliant pianist playing the music. THAT’S the show.
But that is SO not the show!
So, what are these creative meetings like?
Well today I met with Tim Maurice, the Boston-Area music director who’s been helping me develop the show for the last 5 years. Tim has become more than a Music Director – more like a Creative Facilitator, making it possible for me to finish the show, set up the studio, re-arrange the music, perform the live workshop performance and create the audition pages.
Today our goal was to create a working studio for me to share videos with YOU … and here’s what the first one looked like! I jumped onto Facebook Live and did a live test.
