WELCOME TO THE HOMEWORK DISPLAY FOR
Inside Jazz Tunes & Blues Harp Style 2021 – Half-Baked Projects [August 30]
This is the page where you can view all the homework videos, images and text that members submit so we can go over them during the weekly masterclass-chats.
“The Half-Bake” is a 90-second video that shows the ‘idea’ of what you want your Final-Beginning project to be so that DHC can coach you on how to create the “Final-Beginning” project.

I keep doing these little arpeggiated filigree things with the chords.
What is working? What isn’t working.
I know that I’m fishing around for the right chord sometimes, but I seem to recover and get there eventually. The fully baked project would be playing and singing a verse in English, then doing a comp section, then coming back in with the refrain in French. I abbreviated the whole thing to fit it into 90 seconds.
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
In the comp section, I wonder if I should do something more rhythmic

This is my half-baked, which incorporates both playing and telling my story of Carol — trying to find her groove

Since I am still trying to understand jazz and blues and not yet “getting it”, I thought I would try a project that acknowledges my struggles by incorporating story telling into my harp playing. What I want coaching on is: how well is this working and what might I do differently? I am having so much fun with the story telling part that I would like to do more of it with harp playing. How might I turn my half baked into a final beginning project? I’m not sure where to go from here.

A continuation of the look into my mind. Another chord progressions, this time with some examples. I had more than 20 to pick from (and the list is growing!) I plan on putting this with other chord progressions as part of a program. I wasn’t sure if I should sing, but a couple of the songs people might not have heard of. If I was doing it with a group, I might have a “name that tune” and have people join in. And this time I’m not in comic book style.
What do you need coaching on in this video? What are you trying to do that you’re having trouble doing? What can you not figure out? [You must ask a question here, because I can’t coach you unless I know what you’re having trouble with, or trying to do that’s challenging you, or what kind of feedback you’re looking for.] If you just need to know what IS working, you can say “Please just tell me what IS working”)
Please tell me what’s working – and again – should I sing or limit examples to songs people will be able to identify without the words? Again, I’m just forcing myself to do the project. Instead of just jazz or blues for the harp, I’m looking more at things from summer harp jam. (Even though this progression was from the tool kit.)
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
These are familiar songs. Some are public domain, but I think I’m ok because of fair use- using the music for education or critique. I used this progression because I was improvising on it and my husband asked me where he knew the song from – so we set out trying to figure out which one it reminded him of. He spent the next week finding examples. (It turned out he was thinking of Gethsame- I Only Want to Say from Jesus Christ Superstar.)

Just a description of fair use of published music, and why I think it’s okay to leave it in the recording – although I could be interpreting it wrong. Could be a discussion for another time.

I couldn’t participate for a long time, i now try to come in again. Therefore, I tried to play a kind of a blues.

I am quite unsure, if this sounds like a blues?
I do always the same with the left hand – a bit boring?
I tried to make a kind of bridge after the 12 bars (well more or less 12 bars) and then have an end similar to the beginning.
I would also appreciate to get inputs for how I could sing to this, I feel unsure how to do this.
Thanks for all feedback!

This is a half-baked version of a piece I wrote today as an improvisation, in that it changes every time I play it. I woke up this morning with this title “The Untethered Harpist” and so I decided to see how that would play out. I sang it with words that changed later in the day, so I didn’t include them and just tried to complete the song enough to submit. I did mess up badly, and had to keep improvising to complete it, running half a minute over-time. I could have tried to make a better version, but it was getting late, so I just accepted what it was as it was.

Aside from smiling more and playing it more accurately, what do I need to do to complete this for the Final Project? For example, do I need to put into an arrangement, use a vamp, more intro/ending and exploration in the middle? I responded according to the first principle in Strings of Passion: Impulse. I was thinking about the theme, Summer of Improv.

Blues using the chords from “Way You are Blues”. I found the SHJ useful especially playing rhythms. There was so much choice that I didn’t know what I was going to do until today.

I would like help with improvising, especially the RH with these chords. I used F, Bb, and C. I would like to play the tune and maybe sing and play the descending bass.

This is the half baked Red River Valley Version No. 1. I start this video in the middle as this piece will be a bit long (but within the 3 minute Final Beginning Project time set).
This version starts in E Flat and modulates to B Flat. This video starts at the BFlat section and modulates back to E Flat for the ending of the piece.

I would like advice on the modulation from BFlat back to E flat. I have tried to include your jazz harp warm up modulation but have challenges fitting it in. What are your thoughts on this?
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
As you know, I did not like this song at all. However, I first did some research into it and learned some more history to it (It is Canadian and American…traded back and forth around the campfires) and interestingly enough, it was the very last piece played by Harpo Marx in public.
I chose E Flat because I thought that if I played around with the song unencumbered by lever shortenings, I would like it more. This led me to a very slow ballad. I want it to be poignant.

I didn’t fix my mistakes, I am practicing and playing slowly but sometimes my fingers don’t go where I want them to. I need coaching on the transitions from each style (i.e., from melody to slap base/riff. Should I just allow more time? All feedback is appreciated!

In this video clip I’m improvising over the changes from “Orpheus.” Well, kind of. I invariably get lost, so my chord progression isn’t exactly what’s on the page. I’m trying to keep the rhythm bossa-ish, and much of the time that works. Initially my RH is playing just single notes in the high register, then it drops down when I have the fun lever shifts; and towards the end of the clip my RH is grabbing semi-random clusters.

I decided a while ago that I couldn’t possibly play this while looking at the page; except for a few stumbles, I can get through okay if I’m singing the melody. But when it’s time to improvise, I lose the melody and I lose my way. What ideas can you share that might help me keep oriented?
I’m wondering, too, about the flow in the improv, specifically: when the RH shifts registers, do I need to soften that shift somehow; and does it seem to work okay to follow the single-note noodling with bunches of clusters in the second half of the verse?
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?

When I first joined the academy in January I was a bit frustrated that I had so much going around on our small farm that I couldn’t find time to play the harp. During “strings of passion” and “clarify your vision” I got the idea of writing a blues called “animal harp blues” and set it aside until now. This is a double challenge for me, since I am no practiced singer and playing the blues is also new. But I want to give it a try.

I have trouble with singing the blues (Video 0:30). I’m not sure if it sounds right. I also tried it now with a kind of speaking (Video 1:30). I’m not sure if I should do it only with speaking or singing or combining both, which I think would be fun. Also I would like to know what is working up to now.
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
When I mentioned my frustration back then in a chat how I could get all together, DHC had the idea of taking an old harp to the animals and see how they react. Now I’m making fotos and short videos of the horses, sheep, bees and so on with the harp. This is really fun and would like to combine the pictures somehow to the video of my final project blues. Thank you, Deborah, for your wonderful advice back then.

tune popped into my head from way pre-covid sessions. I decided to just record instead of preparing, and see what my left hand would get up to! I never submit homework. I also overthink, over criticize, and overdo, so this is an experiment in sharing reality. Although I did do some video editing since I am learning how to, and I sorta got stuck with some filters I didn’t quite intend! Didn’t edit the audio though! All me.

This is a video submission of the progression for In Other Words/Fly Me to The Moon in Eb/Cm. My objective with this tune is to shape my execution for voice and blowing starting slow and changing rhythm then ending slow.

For this submission I sampled a few styles of how I would play this. Does the beginning simplicity work? Then switching to a Brazilian rhythm? I struggle with a few chords like the D7 which I abbreviate with +9 and +11. Is it too chunky? The voice I think can come in the beginning and in the comping section. The A section I would sing. Then blow the A section and sing the B section then blow A again and then finish singing the B section.

I presented this piece two years ago and Im still working it. I love this progression and how you can play with it to create different moods within one rendition.

This video is an example of the type of thing I want to perform in a one woman and her poetry and harp show. It draws on everything I’ve learnt in the Academy about performing and connecting with the audience. What I haven’t yet managed to do is incorporate specific styles eg Blues, Jazz

I’d like ideas on how to incorporate more music generally, and specifically Blues music and other styles we are learning, into poetry reading. Eg how to substitute, add etc
And I’d love feedback on what’s working here please.

I’d like ideas on how to include more ‘music’ – or maybe even whether MORE music would enhance the experience, or detract from it.
This video is obviously FAR too long and I’m happy for any part of it to be played for review.

Mistakenly I made a video that was too long. It has an improvisation beginning, then one chorus of singing in English (12 bar), one chorus singing in Hebrew, one section of instrumental playing (12 bar), 12 bar improvisation in singing and finished with an instrumental improvisation. I will be happy if you will look at the video from minute 0.30.
I was looking for a blues song that I can sing but I don’t know a lot, so I was lost. Then I decided to take a song that I wrote (that has a different lyric) and the second part I sang in Hebrew.

* How can I make the singing more “blues stile”
* Do you have ideas of how to make the section after the singing more interesting? I fined the transition challenging in a way that I need to breath for a second and as it is, I think it’s not interesting enough.
* Also, my singing improvisation part is not developed as I would like. how do I work on that? I am afraid to sing something that doesn’t work so I’m staying pretty much at the same place
