WELCOME TO THE HOMEWORK DISPLAY FOR
Inside Jazz Tunes 2021 – [August 2] – Week 6
This is the page where you can view all the homework videos, images and text that members submit so we can go over them during the weekly masterclass-chats.
This week’s homework was to choose a chart and play the first chorus of improv. In other words, don’t play the MELODY, but play as if you’d just played the melody and were starting your first chorus of improv

-this video is my accompaniment (bass, comping, fills and improv) for Supernumerary Moon. When it is worked out fully, it will accompany a singer and violinist. In this 90 sec. clip you will hear a very short intro, section A (not repeated for this clip), section B (has crazy double/triple lever flips) with some fills/improv, section A, short ending.

I need some help on the intro and tips for making smoother double lever changes (up).
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
The tempo is a touch too slow but I’m hoping to speed it up with some practice. It is part of a set of three Moon tunes.
Moon Estuary, Supernumerary Moon, Harvest Orbiting Astronomical Body

I want to get the jazz waltz feel in the left hand chord progression, but I think it is escaping me! Also, I am not happy with my melodic improv, because it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. So, please give me guidance on the left hand rhythm, and I would like suggestions on how to make the melodic improv move along instead of what I perceive as going in circles. Help! Also, I’m not sure I had any lead into the Bb – Eb chords.
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
The challenge was getting my brain, my right hand and my left hand to all work together! I think they were at odds with one another.

This clip is from the second half of “Orpheus.” I’m singing the melody (without words) and attempting to play a nice rhythmic accompaniment. I discovered that I can play almost the entire piece without lever flips (avoiding the G/G# issue). Where I really need/want to flip levers is for the 3rd line from the bottom, where there is a half-dim E followed by a dominant A7 (so I flip Bb and C#). That’s the focus of the clip. (I’m not to the point of improvising over the changes yet, just trying to accompany the melody.)

I’m still trying to figure out how to make the lever changes without interrupting the flow and producing a soundscape that I like. What ideas would you suggest to approach this?

All my focus was on the left hand pattern. I couldn’t also pay attention to the right hand, so I just let it go up and down but at some point it became boring. How do I make the right hand more interesting when I really need to focus on the left hand pattern?
