Comments from This Session of Harp Time Live
Today we are going to play the Blues.
Hip Harp Academy has a brand new Blues Jam Harp Challenge Camp that started Tue. Jul 5, 2022.
https://www.hipharp.com/blues-jam-harp-challenge-bjhc
Our harps are tuned in the Key of C.
We are playing in D – Dorian.
It’s all about repetition, patterns and most of all having FUN!
DHC was using a Looper today and playing along to it using different Riff’s from the Blues Jam Harp Camp. You could mimick what DHC did or do your own thing.
Pentatonic Scale
(decending from Right Hand [Thumb – 1st finger – 2nd finger to Left Hand [Thumb – 1st finger – 2nd finger])
(RH) D – C – A (LH) G – F – D
T – 2f – 3f T – 2f – 3f
Raising the 4th (G to G#) Play around with notes
G# – A
G# – A – F
G# – A – F – D
G# – A – F – D – F
Bending the G to G#
You can do this slowly or quickly play around with the sound.
The power of pattern. Try different patterns and move them around. Don’t worry about the rhythm just have FUN and feel the music.

16:52:25 From Winnie Lee Bing Toh to Everyone:
May I ask the background playalong song- is it from a looper?
16:53:02 From Tammy H to Everyone:
Winnie Yes DHC has her looper in the background
16:53:10 From Natalie T to Everyone:
Is this going to be an unboxing video!? 😂
16:54:07 From Winnie Lee Bing Toh to Everyone:
my looper does not have that cool song. Does DHC record her own play along background songs?
16:55:24 From Cherrie Mooney–(Bad Axe, MI USA) to Everyone:
I liked trying different options
16:55:57 From Alex Ives to Everyone:
I did about two call and response, but right away I got into me, me, me all the time.
16:55:57 From Kimberly to Everyone:
I like the call and response because I matched your rhythm on whatever notes I wanted from the pentatonic scale
16:56:07 From Fern Nelson to Everyone:
It took the pressure off of me to come up with a riff. It was quite fun. I rarely play with a background tape.
16:56:19 From Mona Seering to Everyone:
I totally dinked off whilst at least watching and g upping all about pure fun today!
16:56:23 From Cathy Hornby to Everyone:
I found it fun and easy to play the rhythms but I’ve learned that my fingers don’t know the pentatonic shapes, so I was more ‘pretending’ since the groove was cool, but the actual notes….not so much! Still fun!
16:56:54 From Betty Herloski to Everyone:
Fun to copy pattern and then move on to improve
16:57:37 From Joke Verdoold to Everyone:
I was mostly too late in reacting at this high speed, so I started to play for myself, repeating the example several times just how it would come.
16:58:50 From Winnie Lee Bing Toh to Everyone:
Can I do glissando before doing Kerfuffle?
17:00:46 From Winnie Lee Bing Toh to Everyone:
Is it common to apply glissando in Blue riffs?
17:01:34 From Winnie Lee Bing Toh to Everyone:
apply to
17:04:18 From Annie Jones to Everyone:
1 note for 4 bars, add the second for 4 bars, and the 3rd note for 8-12. 1, IV, 5 for the bass chords?
17:06:51 From Annie Jones to Everyone:
The bent note is wonderful and SO blues..
17:08:24 From Annie Jones to Everyone:
And the pause rest really brings you back to the ground ….
17:11:36 From Annie Jones to Everyone:
🥹❤️
17:13:10 From Tammy H to Everyone:
I loved playing around with bending the G
17:13:14 From Cherrie Mooney–(Bad Axe, MI USA) to Everyone:
i was more open to experimenting.
17:14:02 From Carol Booth to Everyone:
I may not be any good as a blues player, but sure can have fun with just the pentatonic scale and sharped or bent Gs
17:14:17 From Joke Verdoold to Everyone:
Frustrated because I can’t copy you and not use my both hands equally fluently, but then I didn’t care and just got in the groove withe the rhytme and played for myself.
17:14:20 From Miriam Bennett to Everyone:
I discovered that it was super DUPER AWESOME!!
17:14:37 From sarah to Everyone:
I love to copy Deborah to get new ideas, to play and feel the rhythm.
17:15:18 From Betty Herloski to Everyone:
Fun. Found new sounds I liked. Interesting that the blended G can sound bluesy, and other times feel oriental
17:15:36 From Laurie to Everyone:
I’m getting that the groove is everything. And your modeling of having fun with it reinforces that anything goes as long as you’re in the groove – 1 note, 2 notes, 1 hand 2 hands, it’s limitless. So I wanna go play with it more and have fun with it
17:15:43 From Betty Kilgus to Everyone:

17:15:51 From Winnie Lee Bing Toh to Everyone:
I get a better picture of kerfuffle after watching you today. Lately I recorded by watching the camp’s Riff 6, I had problem with stopping the background music instantly and applying kerfuffle. The action has to be very fast and smooth. My kerfuffle was a bit slow as well.
17:16:35 From Annie Jones to Everyone:
Rhythm and change in that is so powerful.
17:18:14 From Kristen Barry to Everyone:
I’m with Miriam that tthis is super duper awesome. I was not able to follow you easily but I got into a jam with the various riffs and playing with the pentatonic scale!
17:19:02 From Annie Jones to Everyone:
Same notes, but move the mode .. same pattern, different mode, changes the mood and the feeling.
17:20:51 From Annie Jones to Everyone:
YES
17:21:07 From Miriam Bennett to Everyone:
Oh yeah
17:23:28 From Winnie Lee Bing Toh to Everyone:
my last question: is it common to play with chords or 2 notes in blue riffs?
17:27:51 From Laurie to Everyone:
Thank you!!
17:27:55 From Annie Jones to Everyone:
Late here, need to go. Tx everyone x
17:28:01 From Kimberly Tuttle to Everyone:
