WELCOME TO THE HOMEWORK DISPLAY FOR
Baroque Flamenco Beyond the Page 2021 – [May 17] – Half Baked Projects
This is the page where you can view all the Half Baked videos, images and text that members submit so we can go over them during the weekly masterclass-chats.
The Half Baked Project for “Baroque Flamenco Beyond the Page” was to create a completely imperfect version of the piece for sharing the ‘effect’ you want to have of it – not by describing it but by showing it, often just by showing the ‘gestures’ – so that you can get feedback on how you can most easily and quickly get as close as possible to the experience you want to have and to share of the piece.

This video is an idea I have for engaging the elders I work with in playing Baroque Flamenco. It’s an exciting piece and I believe the opportunity for playing rhythm instruments and little harps while I play the piece would be quite a treat for people.

I’m looking for ideas for using Baroque Flamenco as a therapeutic harp piece. I’m not looking to play it in a calming, therapeutic way. I’d like it to have all the pizazz it has and have people join in with the excitement of the piece (including “costumes!)! I’ve just shared a couple of ideas and continue to think about more. What works? What doesn’t? Other ideas?

This is extremely Half-Baked as I only decided to do dress ups and set changes today! In recent weeks I have enjoyed playing the warm-up exercises and have found them comforting and grounding. Today I decided to bring some form to this exciting piece! Experimenting with switching between separate video sections makes me realise I need to craft the musical segues more artfully. Also, there may be a way to make sure my head starts and ends in the same location for each section!

Okay, after having embraced that I prefer to be a meditative kind of harp player, because this is what again and again comes out spontaneously, I created a spontaneous dreamlike hommage à Deborah Henson-Conant’s Baroque Flamenco, and name it „ Maroque Flamingo – dream and fly“
I will never play it twice that way, because there is no plan behind it except the basic form, something completely different might appear next time I play it, and it does not follow the rules of the original piece, but that is what live is like! Rules are rules, and creativity comes inbetween them 😉
Hope you enjoy any part of these 6 minutes of complete imperfection and commitement to the moment of now.
It is too long for homework submission, take the first 90 seconds or any part.

Just would be interested if this is fascinating to listen to, does it transport you into a dreamlike state of mind immediately?
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
I did not plan anything exept using basically the form of Baroque Flamenco, so every version i play us compketely unique, the final project might sound completely different.

I have simplified this so that I haven’t used any of the detailed variations, just warmups. I seem to have a block with getting my fingers (or is it my brain?)to do the variations! Any more hints to get over the block?
Also my strumming seems to devolve into just fiddling up and down the strings with my hands looking a little off angle. Is it just because I am playing a small harpsicle?
Seem to always experience a bit of performance anxiety when the video is turned on, which leads to me hesitating on the strings. Any advice to deal with that?

Special Project.
I am playing an intro for my circus class performance. The theme is “Once Upon a Time”. There will be a LifeSize fairytale style book and performer will enter through the book. I was thinking of playing these different glissando while changing certain levers giving a very “fairy tale” style theme. I then go into a weird tuning (Levers F/G/B/D) which I want to represent a kind of a shift from fairy tale to a land of weirdness. This is a very very rough submission.
TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED COACHING ON. Provide specific questions here so I know what you want me to give you feedback on. Remember, I’m not grading or assessing your work – I’m coaching – and I can only do that if I know what you’re TRYING to do, so I can gear my coaching to help you achieve that.
I need help with the STRUCTURE (as always). I feel like the glissando are missing something. All the TRANSITIONS are pretty much none existent so some help there would be great. I also dont know if the little vamp I play over quite works. I am thinking about leaving this out as its meant to be quite short…30s – 1minute? Maybe a bit longer but I want to keep it short and sweet as I then have to perform on the silks. I just feel like I need to “play” something. I do feel like I am cheating a little if I just do glissandos.
Is there anything else you want me to know about your video?
I basically want this to feel like a fairy tale gone wrong. I want all the prettyness followed by a bit of discord and a circussy feel (I dont know if that’s even a word) ..Maybe even edging towards being a bit dark????. I dont have very long to play so I want it to be snappy but effective. Open to any and all ideas.

This is my half-baked Baroque Flamenco. Well I should better say Baroque Kalamatianos since I changed the flamenco part into the Greek dance Kalamatianos. That is a Greek dance in the 7/8 time signature.
I shortened every part and went right into the cadenza after the second variation. I mainly used your intermediate version and turned it into the Greek rhythm.
The variations parts are mostly improvised, I play them differently every time.
I tried to play every part except for the melody in the 7/8 rhythm of the Greek dance. The transitions still aren’t really fluent.
At the beginning I’d love to have something that sounds more like a bouzouki, but everything I tried didn’t work. So I did the strumming in the Greek rhythm. Do you have any ideas?
When I watch the video I think I should also work on the character of the different parts to make it more interesting. Right now it’s a kind of mishmash but the “show effect” is missing. In the final video I plan to wear something that’s fitting for this piece and to also play standing upright instead of sitting.
And of course please tell me what is working.

Where I play most of the time, the music needs to be fairly calm, so I left out some of the fun percussive effects and shortened the structure to intro, melody, improv, cadenza, melody, ending.

I am having a hard time making a convincing transition from Baroque to Flamenco. I want help on making that more dramatic, and also guidance on the tempo. I’ve tried counting out loud, tapping on soundboard, using the metronome (a real challenge) and when I tried to make a video, the rhythm sort of abandons me!

I’m sending you bare bare bones – introduction to first melody (remembering to lower the lever) , melody down to first flamenco, transition to melody, 2nd flamenco to cadenza transition and transition to final part. I didn’t really even play the intro I will do, just a place holder. Same with the cadenza – just a place holder (and not really in time!) the import things are the transitions. So ignore introduction and cadenza – transitions are what I need feedback on. And anything else that sticks out.

I’m trying to work out the transitions – from melody (which I know really well) and the flamenco parts And transition to the cadenza – and to the final part.

This was way different than my first two weeks. I had a brief warm up, place pd my camera and taped. One and done. So, it’s longer than I want but I really want feedback on the transitions. I tried the “get out of the room early” on the second flamenco, I’m hoping it works. Feel free to skip through parts that aren’t what I’m focusing on. Also wanted to let you know I’m more comfortable with taping myself now.

I’m still working things out with my brother, starting with putting chords to the written out score. So we have a place to “meet in the middle,” a common starting point. I’m still reviewing it to see if it makes sense. Part of the last page probably will only make sense to me – the crescendo to the final, notes I start on, the counting I do in my head, the remember to rit.
Is there anything else you want me to know about your graphic/written homework?
I found that having the chords there along with the written score helped me so much in playing the piece! I guess with guitar background it just seems more comfortable, if nothing else I can play those chords. I know we were given a shorthand version before, but in doing this for my brother, I really had to look at the chords and what the music was saying, and what I was thinking about the music.

- Strumming—As you can hear in the video, my strums had a strong ’thud’ sound, with soft notes. I’d like to play the notes loud, without the dead, thud sound. I did watch the three student videos on this subject. They helped with not hurting my cuticles, but I just can’t get a decent sound.2. Open hand while playing octaves—My second and third fingers want to bend while playing octaves. Is there an exercise to help with keeping my hand flat?3. Describe your final project so I know exactly what you’re sending me.
Its a chopped-up video to show my almost attempt at the whole enchilada of BF!
What principles from this course or from chats did you use to develop, perform, and record this project – and how did they play a part in your process?
In our chats, DHC continually emphasized the transitions of character. To find that feeling, the change in rhythms, how you decide to relegate time in the piece – is a practice of finding yourself in the physicality of the music.
Give a short description of what it took for you to be able to play what you did – both logistically and emotionally.
I clearly can’t play any of the parts very well but in my practice, I felt I needed to play through the whole piece to understand it, and to try to feel the transitional moments. I was exhausted every time I went through it but became more and more addicted to memorizing, checking to see if I was doing it right.
What freedoms and blocks within yourself did you connect with (or struggle with) in the process?
My video is a chop fest but a true sample of my embodiment of the piece to date. I am not sure whether I should isolate each part to practice or continue to play all the way through as I learn to feel more confident of the form and content.
What challenges did you meet while connecting with your own freedom of expression in this project?
At first, when I played parts of the piece I felt freedom. I played with it. In trying to learn it, less so. I can’t read the music by rote, I have to memorize it. To find comfort in the different parts may release me again to improvise. Right now I have lost my innocence.
What other parts of your life were impacted by what you learned in this class, and how?
Because this piece is a project unto itself, I had to totally isolate time for it apart from other music I do. Being in the HHA as long as I have been, this is the first time I ever gave BF serious study.
What were your personal “Ahas”?
1) that this is performance art!!! 2) That I became intrigued with trying to master the many techniques; 3) That this has totally challenged and changed the way I play the harp. Surprised!!
Is there anything else you want people to know when they watch your video?
I apologize for the distortion. I did this in one take and after sitting down to edit it realized the sound was buzzy. I used a different device. I adjusted the sound in iMovie as best I could without spending a lifetime on it. Next time I wont use this device.

This is my recording for my 10 min children’s music recording for my Level 1 Harps for Healing final. It’s a 10 minute recording. You can just listen to the first 90 seconds or hop around. Whatever. How do you do not to get stressed out (by yourself) when you have a deadline coming up?
For example you have to make a video and you know you have little time, the perfect attitude and most constructive one would be to stay very calm and concentrated, but it is so easy to just get lost in a more stressful feeling….

I played only the Cadenza. I had in mind playing a 3 harp version, play one part at the time and put them one on top of the other. I didn’t manage to make it work. So I played a shorter one harp version, as written.
For the three harps, I pictured it like as if the 3 harps were talking to each other and wanting each to be right….. At the end they agree and come back together.

It’s my own free rendition of Baroque Flamenco, after messing myself up last week, I stopped using the sheetmusic. It’s hard to concentrate on multiple aspects at once. Already not being able to play it two times in the same way, now also concentrating on keeping it short, I feel I miss some fire.

Please, tell me what is working and what I can do to make things work even better. How can I learn more about quick problem solving while playing? There’s always going something wrong when I play without sheet-music.

I made a video with my questions in it. My idea was to first learn the piece from paper and to come up with solutions for the lever changes problems. Sally helped me a lot, with good tips. Due to lack of time and virtuosity, I’m still in the learning and trial phase. I am aware that I was tense while recording. I couldn’t even laugh, because I felt time pressure and I was worried if I ask my questions clearly.

the questions i have how can i improve the strumming and make sure it sounds with the right groove? My apreggios are technically not played well. They buzz and not every tone sounds the same. What can I do to improve this other than playing slower? Are the ( leverchange) solutions okay, I have to play a G chord? All tips are welcome. What advice do you give me on how to study well, so that the piece becomes a whole piece how should I work to let go the sheetmusic?
