5-Day Vision-to-Action Challenge Q&A Replay
Thu. Jan. 7, 2020
(from the 5-Day “Vision-to-Action” Challenge)
The Chat Feed (click to open)
14:33:03 From Anne Horton : My biggest takeaway was putting a name to (identifying) so clearly what gets between me and my harp
14:33:09 From Lyn Thompson : I know have a vision for a music journey.
14:33:33 From Tammy Halun : not about achievement it’s about the process
14:33:36 From Ilene Miller : It’s ok not to know your vision, too.
14:34:02 From Debra Sawyer : Takeaway: My Mission and Vision is about self-actualizing. I feel more mature today!
14:34:12 From heather flinn : To be able to move from motivation through to mission to creative process
14:35:09 From Joke Verdoold : I realised that now I got more fluency in the things I struggled before, and I can go on without correcting myself more and more. Seeing that this idea really works is my biggest takeaway.
14:35:16 From Ilene Miller : Freedom. If I relax, then all of a sudden I am making music.
14:35:27 From Leanne Ewen : Deborah I appreciate how you share your vulnerability. It give me the courage to be the same.
14:36:26 From Dimitra Fleissner : I think I finally accepted my mission.
14:37:06 From Jody Pilon : I am learning that trying to play ‘perfectly’ inhibits my playing overall.
14:37:45 From Kathy King : This has reinforced a lot of what I already knew about myself and my vision. Getting in touch with deeper emotions about all of these concepts is going to be SO helpful.
14:38:19 From Barbara Lawson : My takeaway is that improvising is possible for me. Today’s activity helped me see what I might play with improvising.
14:38:29 From Fern Nelson : My vision is to be able to sit down at my harp and play beautifully for 30 minutes, If someone asks me to play, I want to be able to say “yes” with confidence. My improv needs improve alot. I don’t know how to memorize a piece and add put improv in the middle. I seem to need the sheet music for support. I’d like to be able to sit down with nothing but the harp and play.
14:38:33 From Daniela Altavilla : I love to have little motivs that it makes me sure, like a life buoy in the sea..
14:39:22 From Susan . : My mission is to accept that my vision for a musical journey isn’t going away. I can’t not do it. So throw the doubters in the demon pot when they get in my way.
14:39:26 From Jan Kingston : I am definitely in the process of figuring out my mission still. I have directions, thoughts and feelings, but still want to feel more where I am going.
14:40:06 From Llewella White : My vision is to let go and really explore and carry through without losing faith in the process
14:40:14 From Lynne Lapidus : Pretending you have a vision. Pretending is like baby-steps towards INtending. Intention is a precursor to manifestation.
14:40:29 From Kirsti Kaldro : Yes, Susan! Harp chooses you! When it chooses you , it doesn’t go away!
14:42:47 From Maria Wilson : Deborah must be reading from the questions page on the facebook site not the chat.
14:42:48 From Anne Horton : I discovered that as robust as my harp vision is (“to play the harp effortlessly”), this vision is intact itself a “mission for a higher vision” which “competes” with other missions in my life to achieve that same vision!
14:43:39 From Margie Bekoff : I’m excited to be playful at the harp – my harp calls me more with the freedom of the improvisations around the simple motifs.
14:44:25 From Stefanie Bieber : I learnt that I could listen myself to the words I tell my improv students everyday ;o)
14:44:27 From Barbara Irvin : Thanks for saying that, Maria. I’ve been trying to figure out where she was, thinking she was on this chat somewhere.
14:45:15 From Sarah Harpie2 : I feel lot of joy that through this process I allow myself to follow my desires and dreams. It’s fine that they aren’t totally clear I may “ travel” with my harp. Is special to play with the motives and that I like it something what is coming out. another take way. To see you saying DHC it’s difficult to show you’re vulnerability but you show it al lot. it special to watch and a take away.
14:45:46 From Maria Wilson : I don’t get around to responding to the questions until later in the evening usually….
14:49:10 From Maria Wilson : She is on the chat now
14:49:21 From Helen Wright : listening to classical music now I hear lots of little motifs and I think aha… they were doing THIS
14:50:10 From Susanne Reimoser : I noticed that this helped me to learn to improvise not only on the harp but in other things like cooking. Normally I keep exactly to recipes and yesterday I just improvised with whatever I had in the kitchen and my family was happy with it. 🙂 It helps me to let go of preset rules and be more creative
14:51:16 From Jan Kingston : I am seeing it in the chat…
14:51:51 From Jan Kingston : Oh, I see. Not seeing the FB people.
14:51:53 From Paula Scott-Frantz : Even being so new to the harp I can feel a depth of soul connection that is possible
And thank you everyone that has been so kind and helpful! I feel my Vision will happen
14:52:42 From Barbara Irvin : Some of us thought you were on the FB page and not on here on Zoom, and it was the opposite? Interesting.
14:53:55 From Barbara Irvin : Blues by the Dozen. Great idea. I missed that the last time through.
14:57:29 From Barbara Irvin : Thanks for mentioning that about Sunday, Deborah, as I haven’t been able to get my answers typed in and now have gotten behind. Too much else to attend to this week!!
14:59:07 From Leanne Ewen : Please please please can we have a second challenge in about 2 months so we can work on these things and then dig deeper?
15:00:08 From Kirsti Kaldro : Do some people enroll in the academy for two years, since it’s hard to get through all the material in one?
15:00:24 From Margi Miller : Could you show us what it is like to move from one motif to the next, e.g. day one to day two?
15:00:39 From Leanne Ewen : Do you have to be a member of the academy to do string of passion or can you do it as a stand alone?
15:01:01 From Sarah Harpie2 : I never used FB, if I still do the homework. How do I now and check that I do it on the right place?
15:01:06 From DHC : StringsOfPassion.com
15:01:08 From Esthe Le : yes I need help with connecting the dots..
15:01:13 From Llewella White : would you advise any good books websites or do you have any sheets with structures for improv? For example 1,4, 5 etc? But the more different the better 😁 Thank you for all your beauty and exuberance Deborah! 🌈💙
15:02:07 From Llewella White : Oh wait … so you mean you can access these in the course?
15:02:39 From Maria Wilson : I hope it’s ok ..I’ve been sharing my progress a little on my group facebook site. This has really encouraged me to record myself more.
15:03:30 From Maria Wilson : I’ve used Zoom to record myself and then post it on facebook. that way I can change my backgrounds…:)
15:04:42 From Lyn Thompson : I have to leave for a few minutes….but will be back.
15:05:24 From Esthe Le : Could share my sheet now on Zoom if it is allowed
15:13:29 From Maria Wilson : I like that we are going over the Creative skillset…I realize I need to add more…..
15:14:15 From Jan Kingston : Feeling exhausted. Didn’t get much sleep last night. I will lie down while I am listening, so I’ll turn my camera off. But I’m still here. 🙂
15:15:58 From Anne Horton : When I first joined this academy it seemed I found myself with tears at some point during every session!! with DHC!!!
15:18:45 From Vera Stern : it feels wonderful not to be alone in the world! there are kindred spirits here. I can allow myself freedom and opening of heart.
15:19:47 From Paula Scott-Frantz : That is beautiful Vera! I feel it too.
15:25:34 From Mary R : yes vera and anne!
15:26:23 From Maria Wilson : I like having harp journal to track my progress…or you could do specific journal for goal or your harp vision…..
15:26:27 From Anne Horton : Hip Harp Academy is much more than a “classroom” .. it’s a community of like-minded and supportive friends who all happen to be harpists (and no-one will ever tell you to stop talking about harps!! He he) … right Vera?
15:28:01 From Maria Wilson : yes…I like mixing my love of costuming with my harp playing
15:28:03 From Anne Horton : Maria … yes I have a harp journal too … in particular I have a “Speed Writing” harp journal which has become a very interesting record of my “harp journey”
15:28:31 From Maria Wilson : I forgot about the speed writing! Thanks for reminding me!
15:28:40 From Llewella White : This idea of what is needed being concrete- such as a binder, booking space, recording progress somewhere. I think I’ve been lost trying to solidify it in real terms – you need a strategy to feel safe enough to let go!! 😁
15:29:01 From Anne Horton : Maria … costuming?!!! Wow!! I can’t wait to see more of that!!
15:29:07 From Llewella White : It makes so much sense now and doesn’t feel abstract
15:29:21 From Cheryl Mitchell : Speed Writing harp 🙂
15:29:39 From Joyce Douglas To DHC(privately) : can you stop sharing screen so we can see better for speaker view
15:30:45 From Cheryl Mitchell : Thank you Esthe Le.
15:30:49 From Anne Horton : “Strategies”, “tactics”, “mission” – all speak to the same thing .. the HOW to realise my vision. … and it seems to me that such practical steps can help you to discover your vision!
15:31:52 From Esthe Le : is speed writing like stream of consciousness ala James Joyce ?
15:32:13 From Jan Kingston : I’m still here. Just listening lying down. This is really interesting. Helpful. Inspiring.
15:32:34 From Esthe Le : yes KINDRED SPIRITS !
15:33:13 From Dimitra Fleissner : The community in the academy is really special. It’s a safe place for me.
15:33:46 From Kirsti Kaldro : About 10 years ago I decided to start collaging. I started out using pieces of cardboard for canvases. I gathered all the various media I had around the house and started making collages based on healing ideas or uplifting thoughts. Life intervened and then I did not collage for years, although I always had my collages to look at. Then when I started working as a harp therapy practitioner at the hospital, I was asked to come up with an activity to work with groups in behavioral health. I started a project called Collage Illuminations. I make collage kits for patients and play meditative music while the patients collage. During Covid, my supervisor set up a playlist of my harp videos and I started making collage kits for the patients, as well as for hospice. I never could have predicted how I would synthesize these two things that I love. This would not have happened if I had not gone out into the world with my harp.
15:35:18 From Nancy C : Yes you community feels welcoming to all.
15:35:22 From Paula Scott-Frantz To DHC(privately) : I have only played harp for a year but I had musical experience as a young person, piano, cello but that was years ago should I look into Start Harp before String of Passion. I don’t have a lot of money to take lots of classes
15:36:23 From Barbara Irvin : Thank you, Esthe for sharing, and DHC!! That was amazing to be able to see how you worked with Esthe’s vision, mission, etc. I learned a lot about how to proceed with this format, and it brought some things to mind I’d like to think about. Much appreciated. Thank you both.
15:36:48 From Jan Kingston : yes. Very helpful. thank you Esthe and Deborah.
15:37:19 From Helen Wright : I love that you bring the WHOLE harper to the harp (even if that includes a “random” assortment of skills).
15:38:33 From Mary R : So, this is slowly getting me to a place of drawing it all together. The What I Do question and the How Can What I Do Help You question! Meditation. Blog writing. Story writing. Book plans. Irish Harp. Harp therapy. Song writing. Fringe show…maybe? Working with the Crone. Developing new website so itreflects who I really am and what I’m doing! Oh and also making a living from all that 😉 Thank you!!!!
15:39:35 From Tara O’Brien Pride : We can take traditional roles as a starting point, but finding ways to integrate across our selves is so powerful.
15:39:51 From Mary R : oh and editing and proofreading. and and and lol
15:40:17 From Kirsti Kaldro : Ive been thinking about that – a project with patients with Haiku, and interpreting the Haiku!
15:41:28 From Esthe Le : HAIKU fun and intense-great idea !
15:43:40 From Nancy C To DHC(privately) : From Harp Live I improvise and sing, through the day, passing by a harp, intermittently, about the stress of Covid days, and for moments of joy.
15:43:54 From Victoria Johnson : Thank you for your gift of sight, DHC. You are not just giving feedback; you are also giving us feedforward which will help us lift off. Thank you so much.
15:44:28 From Barbara Irvin : And Shelley has some special classes and prices right now, e.g., one is on technique.
15:44:43 From Kathy King : When I stared with DHC, I could barely play 2 hands together. Not a new musician, but new to the harp. The course was great, but I was SO frustrated. Took a year of harp lessons and came back to DHC a much happier student!
15:44:53 From Ilene Miller : What is the name of her website again?
15:45:05 From Tammy Halun : I think it’s finding the right fit for your learning style
15:45:37 From Barbara Irvin : Irene, Do you mean Shelley’s?
15:45:42 From Tara O’Brien Pride : startharp.com is Shelly’s site.
15:46:04 From Paula Scott-Frantz To DHC(privately) : Thank You so Much
15:46:08 From Vera Stern : DHC has a complex system of teaching: listening, playing from one note, combining hands, rhythm, some technique, soul training 🙂 ,
15:46:47 From Vera Stern : harmony, and sound effects!
15:47:26 From Barbara Lawson : How much is a single class at the academy?
15:48:35 From Tammy Halun : Roots to grow from
15:49:48 From Vera Stern : these are like the different sides of a diamond. together they form the diamond and its quality.
15:50:37 From Tara O’Brien Pride : That’s a great affirmation, that we shouldn’t necessarily accept others’ limitations for us when it comes to creative work.
15:51:24 From Susanne Reimoser : I wonder if I will find something to bring all my things under one roof…
15:53:07 From Mary R : that’s fantastic dhc – everything you said right befire you read my comment and then everything you told me…and I want to know that package you can see 🙂
15:53:14 From Jan Kingston : I loved your soap box, Deborah. I am a Feldenkrais teacher, a mother, a grandma, a harper, a trauma therapist, a walker and a runner and a lover of exercise, and a person who is fascinated with how the body works, and a speaker and lover of languages and a studier of cultures. It is so inspiring to hear how you shut down part of yourself, but you found how to bring that in later. I have been told the same thing. That I have to choose. But I agree. It is all part of me. I’ve been confused about how to put myself out there. This gives me more food for thought and action.
15:56:07 From Joan Davidson : So many creative ideas to consider! Where will I go with this? Wonderful sharing.
15:56:35 From Esthe Le : dearJan-you are very much “out there”—but something special is waiting in the wings , to fly ?
15:57:10 From Jan Kingston : Thank you, Esthe. <3
15:57:50 From Joan Davidson : How do we stop ourselves from self- sabotaging ? Life gets in the way and the harp goes out the window for a while.
15:59:46 From Anne Horton : Barbara … there is not one set price for individual courses – they vary (and they are different lengths too)
16:00:47 From Mary R : oh my @anne – forgot to put ASL!!
16:01:43 From Kathy King : Have to go. Thank you so much, DHC!!!
16:03:14 From Margie Bekoff : I have to go so I can return for Harp Time Live! See you soon! Many thanks, DHC and all for your honest and inspiring sharing!!
16:03:22 From Esthe Le : Hi Joan— in your fantasy where does your harp go to, Could you follow it ?
16:05:50 From Barbara Irvin : Looking for your niche?
16:06:22 From Fern Nelson : I have to go now. Thanks DHC and to all of you harpists! You inspire me
16:06:40 From Joke Verdoold : I think being a generalist is much more satisfying..
16:07:58 From Maria Wilson : I think that this is more than being better at harp..it’s about being a better person…. being whole. with the help of the harp. It has the feeling of self-actualization….
16:09:28 From Susanna Victoria : Have to go, thanks to you DHC and all others who had been on the journey together with me. So inspiring.
16:10:20 From Ilene Miller : So sorry, I have to go. Looking forward to our new class next week.
16:10:45 From Leanne Ewen : I read somewhere that we live our lives in chapters. That we have many things we want to do, but can’t do them all at once. So for a part of our life, more of our focus might be on our career. Another chapter at another time our focus is on our children. The chapter I am in now in my life is I have time to focus on piano, harp, art and sewing…….but knowing that helped me when I wanted to do music but didn’t have time because of my children or career. It helped me know I COULD do everything I wanted to do, but over my life and not all at one time.
16:11:03 From Anne Horton : Surely we don’t have to integrate EVERYTHING into our harp playing?
16:11:10 From Barbara Irvin : I love finding out you are a cartoonist, Deborah! Brilliant! Are any of your cartoons about the harp? Or, do you have a character who plays the harp?
16:11:38 From Lynne Lapidus : Being told “choose” is SO hard. I auditioned to be a guitar major transferring schools- at the time the only choice was classical, which I didn’t mind – but the teacher was going to have me locked in a practice room for the rest of my life. He had performed and taught all over the world, which I thought was fascinating, but never left his practice room. My mother saw the look on my face and knew how much he scared me. I walked out and cried. And I walked out on being a music major in college after one year
16:11:39 From Helen Wright : “by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace towards me was not in vain.”
16:11:53 From Tara O’Brien Pride : I think we have permission to bring in any parts of ourselves, but we don’t have to do all the parts at once or even at all.
16:11:59 From Esthe Le : good night , Ladies and (Gentlemen) I have to go to sleep (after 10 pm here 🙂 with a grateful heart-May we all live and grow into dreams
16:12:05 From Victoria Johnson : Be unapologetic about who you are! 🙂 The intersectionality of our skills and passions make us the unique individuals that we are. 🙂
16:12:08 From Dimitra Fleissner : Takling about character: I remember you saying in a class that you once whatched someone perfect the life out a a song. That really describes it well. Something that is perfect lacks an individual character.
16:12:58 From Helen Wright : Anne— no but it is all a part of you, and all of you comes to the harp.
16:13:53 From Anne Horton : To follow up what I just said above … that was the perfect comeback DHC “just experiment with PUTTING THINGS TOGETHER in the same place and SEE WHAT HAPPENS!!!”
16:13:59 From Kirsti Kaldro : Here is my revision of Carlos Castaneda’s famous quote about the “path with a heart”: “Look at every path closely and deliberately. Does this path have harp? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn’t, it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere; but one has a harp the other doesn’t.” :>)
16:14:20 From Barbara Irvin : Animal harp blues!! Mucking out the stable could make a great blog title! Lol!
16:14:44 From Esthe Le : thanks for the parting words—Kirsti
16:15:50 From Anna Bosanquet : do you have to join the academy at a specific time? And is there any structure in terms of chronology / progression/ development
16:16:11 From Barbara Irvin : I have a call coming up. I have never been able to make Harp Time Live. Maybe one day. This was great! Thanks. Need to go now. Have a great day everybody!! After yesterday’s events, it was great to have some creative ideas sloshing around!!
16:16:52 From Leanne Ewen : I have to go everyone! This has been GREAT! Thank you Deborah for providing this space for us to share.
16:16:54 From Anne Horton : Anna – you can literally join the academy at ANY time – but its best to join at the start of a course
16:18:25 From Lynne Lapidus : Kirsti – a Yaki Way of Knowledge”?
16:18:38 From Barbara Lawson : I am also a painter and there were large periods of time when I didn’t paint because I taught and worked 60 hours a week. When I had time and began a painting, I had grown in my painting by teaching, creating lessons, and working with kids. My growth transfered to the rest of my life.
16:18:55 From Anna Bosanquet : Good to hear there are so many people here with a very wide range of interests / talents / passions. It’s good to know I’m not the only one as was feeling at a loss how to harness all these without feeling like a jack of all trades without any focus or depth of experience.
16:20:29 From Kirsti Kaldro : Lynne, yes, I think its from that one, but he wrote several so I’m not sure…
16:22:02 From Midge Jambor : always, always inspiring and helpful
16:22:10 From Tara O’Brien Pride : Thank you for walking us through this with such candor.
16:23:02 From Paula Scott-Frantz : Good Evening everyone and Thank You so much!
16:23:03 From Jan Kingston : Agreed. With Tara. Thank you very much for your sharing.
16:23:09 From Jan Kingston : All of you.
16:23:30 From Anne Horton : Thanks Deborah!
16:23:34 From Maria Wilson : So nice to get this inspiration
16:23:38 From Kirsti Kaldro : Thank you Deborah! This is so fun and helpful. I loved chatting with you all too!
16:23:43 From Helen Wright : Thank you Deborah!!
16:23:44 From Tara O’Brien Pride : Try this for Harp Time. If you’re coming live, try this link first
16:23:44 From Nancy C : Thank you Deborah! As awaus = ;earmomg
16:23:45 From Vera Stern : thanks a lot everyone!
