The ‘5 Day Vision-to-Action Challenge’ going on right now (Jan 15 – 20, 2023.)
It’s not too late to join – click HERE (you have until Sun Jan 21, 2024 to qualify for the Grand Prize Draw Jan 22, 2024)

Snippet

We did a snippet based on open 5ths in the left hand.
[LH] 2 chords starting GD down to FC. We noodled in [RH].

Then we modulated to G – raising F levers.
In your [RH] go back and forth between E and B and raise your F levers to FC
[LH] chords were EB down to DA.   [RH] Noodling
Modulated back to original.

16:49:27 From Tammy H to Everyone:
I like that it’s a simple pattern that I use over and over again
16:49:40 From heatherflinn to Everyone:
Lots of fun to improvise andnotwonder for a single moment how it sounds
16:50:15 From Bonnie Berk to Everyone:
I really like the first pattern with GD and FC but I didn’t like the EB pattern
16:50:24 From kelly tamayo she/her to Everyone:
fun
16:50:47 From Annette Bjorling to Everyone:
Althoigh having listend to the last two plus hours, I have not yet played today, house and fingers are quite cold — so limiting myself to slow and sparse playing til being warmed up is a fun creative constraint… 😉
16:50:50 From Tara-Seattle, WA to Everyone:
The switch to another key makes it unusual and interesting. I’m only changing 3 levers, so it’s pretty easy to make the switch.
16:50:52 From Miriam to Everyone:
It’s super duper cool that you can create a song by just using awesome chords
16:51:01 From Alice M to Everyone:
So much fun to do, and no need to understand the theory or the modulation, just sounds great, and give slots of freedom to enjoy the notes
16:51:11 From Cherie Maffey to Everyone:
The E didn’t sound quite right to me, but liked the G D, FC
16:51:56 From Annette Bjorling to Everyone:
And it was also fun to dance along! (While trying to get warm…)
16:52:33 From Ginette Abbanat to Everyone:
Not sure what to do with right hand melody?
16:53:09 From Joyce – Sequim, WA to Everyone:
Reacted to “And it was also fun …” with 💃
16:54:11 From Cherrie Mooney to Everyone:
I like that it’s easy to change keys.
16:54:42 From Lori’s iPad (2) to Everyone:
I’m a very early beginner and i get the open fifth but can you give me a simple filler like what your playing?
16:55:18 From Betty, Webster NY to Everyone:
I love the E!
16:56:50 From Belinda Hunt to Everyone:
I love the E too!
17:08:54 From Bonnie Berk to Everyone:
Yes, that was very helpful
17:09:32 From Miriam to Everyone:
I also messed up and I kept going, and when I kept going it sounded like part of a real song. That is TOO cool!
17:09:38 From Tammy H to Everyone:
It helped when you talked about melody and always having a finger on a string.
17:10:52 From Ginette Abbanat to Everyone:
This is so enlightening….not to feel like you have to play a “song” but I admit the right melodies are still challenging
17:10:54 From Theresa N. to Everyone:
I love how the simplicity and repetition grounds me after a long working day
17:11:04 From Cherrie Mooney to Everyone:
It gets easier the more you go over it.
17:11:16 From Annette Bjorling to Everyone:
I “just” used it as a very cool play-along-warmup, playing my scales and chords etc inside the given modes… good fun…! — and now I am warmed up…
17:11:39 From janetmann to Everyone:
It makes it easier to do over and over. You can get the bass down and just have to think about the RH
17:11:47 From Pam to Everyone:
Lovely to improvise with the group. It has been a long while since I have played regularly so it has been inspiring.
17:11:53 From Tara-Seattle, WA to Everyone:
The first time, I kept to single notes in the RH. This time, I toyed with multi-note shapes in the RH. Sometimes I liked it and sometimes not, but I learn from it either way.
17:11:57 From Cathy Hornby to Everyone:
Repeating made it easier for me to find the other G and Ds and F and Cs or whatever, navigating up and down the harp more easily and finding the notes I wanted (because we’d limited it to two)
17:12:16 From heatherflinn to Everyone:
It is definitely a thing I worry about when improvising to worry that I am using a pattern too often or too long. One doesn’t want the audience to fall asleep but once you are in it it is often hard to break out
17:13:29 From Helen W to Everyone:
Once I have some (G) pentatonic patterns (which helps me dodge the F if I stay on white strings) then I can use whatever white-string, pentatonic pattern I want (dodging the F) while I get the Fs up (or down).
17:16:40 From Cherrie Mooney to Everyone:
I see the benefit of repeating it over and over to experiment with what works.
17:15:10 From Midyne to Everyone:
I experimented more with rhythms, extended arpeggios & 6th the 2nd time around.
17:15:56 From Midyne to Everyone:
Replying to “I experimented more …”

I also feel like I could use this for background music gigs.
17:17:02 From Cherie Maffey to Everyone:
I like the A D G with the E chord, sounded much good with that jazz feel .
17:17:39 From Miriam to Everyone:
I did tons of rolled chords in the RH and broken chords in the LH
17:18:21 From Bonnie Berk to Everyone:
Thanks, This was great! Lots to practice!
17:20:25 From Pam to Everyone:
Thank you DHC for you generosity and thanks to all participants…you add to the magic. So sorry…must leave early .
17:24:12 From Annette Bjorling to Everyone:
💚💚💚
17:24:42 From Ginette Abbanat to Everyone:
Incredibling motivating!
17:25:16 From Cherie Maffey to Everyone:
To explore different patterns, and keep playing, no matter how it sounds.
17:25:34 From Miriam to Everyone:
That was so fun!!! Awesome
17:26:18 From Sally to Everyone:
I wasn’t thinking at all about my RH. Just went with wherever my right hand took me. Okay as long as I had the basic structure underneath it.
17:27:03 From Midyne to Everyone:
I find more freedom each time and started experimenting with bass patterns.
17:29:59 From heatherflinn to Everyone:
Have’nt done this kind of improv -(for no good reason other than fun )- in awhile so it was a most excellent experience! Thanks
17:30:02 From Naomi Jean to Everyone:
Hi, I came in at the end (and am going to watch the replays) but I want to say I love term “Improv Repertoire”.
Yes!
17:30:56 From Jennifer Medd to Everyone:
The inherent beauty of this process is the way it reframes and invites new thinking and understanding when revisiting old pieces and learning the new!
17:32:54 From Jennifer Medd to Everyone:
This is all new to me and the first time I have joined in with a group in this way. It has changed the way I practise and think about everything that I am learning. I have much greater freedom and play in a far more relaxed way now. Thank you so much!
17:33:10 From Ginette Abbanat to Everyone:
This can liberate my harp journey (as a beginner) I am “stuck” in learning songs rotely. It’s fun but confining.
17:34:06 From Annette Bjorling to Everyone:
Thank you! Great fun
17:34:12 From Miriam to Everyone:
💖🎵
