Hip
Harpist Hopes for Grammy
Grammy-Nominee Deborah Henson-Conant heads to
Awards
Ceremony as her show heads to PBS
At
the 49th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony on February 11th, Composer/Performer
and Grammy-Nominee Deborah Henson-Conant hopes her newest project,
“Invention & Alchemy,” will win a Grammy for
Classical Crossover.
Henson-Conant
is far from a classical performer, but her newest album and
DVD project uses a full symphony orchestra for a performance
best described as a "One Woman show -- with a cast of 80."
This unusual mix of music, stories and theater has won the CD
a Grammy Nomination. The TV version is headed to PBS, to begin
airing in March.
“I'm
thrilled to be nominated!" says Henson-Conant. "This
was a huge project with a spectacularly talented group of musicians,
the Grand Rapids Symphony and conductor David Lockington. Bringing
the show alive in three formats: CD, DVD and TV special, was
a huge undertaking -- but the success we're having with each
format makes it all worthwhile.
"Receiving
a Grammy Nomination for the audio recording is a testament to
Creative Producer Jonathan Wyner and Audio Engineer Tom Bates.
Bringing my work to CD is difficult, since I'm first and foremost
a live performer. My work blends story, music and theater, so
it was a stroke of genius for Wyner to create the CD as a cross
between a soundtrack and a radio play. He developed a true crossover
CD, not just a crossover of musical genres, but of audio forms.
The result is that the CD listener gets completely swept into
the world we created on stage."
Deborah
Henson-Conant plays electric harp and performs in styles from
Blues to Flamenco. She created the music, stories, lyrics and
orchestrations for the Grammy-Nominated "Invention &
Alchemy." PBS airdates begin March 2007 as Henson-Conant
tours in the US and Europe.
